How to eat a pomegranate

When talking about what fruit are in season right now I mentioned that pomegranates are right now. Big Monkey was all excited and asked whether we can have one as she loves them, but she wanted it whole and not already deseeded. Not a problem they are easily found right now. The local grocer's had a big box on display with the sign "pomigranite" I liked that so I chose one of those. Until then I didn't think much about how to actually cut it open and eat it, however, while blog hopping randomly in the afternoon I came across a post on how to open a pomegranate. So that's what we did.

We cut off the top and quartered it.

Then I filled the bowl with water and pulled the seeds out. That way the white membrane floats on the surface and can be easily removed and the seeds don't stain the work top or clothes. I had forgotten about that so I now have a stained chopping board. But that's alright it can be friends with the one I cut beetroot on.

One pomegranate has quite a lot of seeds, we had ours with vanilla ice cream. Yum!

Someone said he didn't want them as they were yucky but strangely had his fingers constantly in my bowl to nick lots and lots of them.

Bit Monkey was very happy and she loved how pretty the insides were and she thought it was delicious, whatever you call it.

Pears...

When Daddy Monkey goes shopping...

He brings home the strangest things.

Yes they are pears, tiny wee little pears.

They are cute, aren't they? They taste just like the big ones they just are gone so much quicker.

Pick your own farm

We took our surprise visitor to the Pick your own farm. I want to make red currant jam which is really hard to get by here.

Everybody helped picking, even little monkey. He was very pleased that he could reach the berries. Last year we didn't pick currants, I only remembered that I like them when we reached the parking lot again. The strawberries are grown it troughs high up so little monkey can't reach them. He has to resort to picking them out of the baskets. However, this year there weren't any more left so we only had raspberries and the currants. When I tried to make the raspberry jam the next day half of them had miraculously disappeared...

PS: Jam is made and very nice, just the way I like it. No pips and not too sweet.

Summer days

The last few days have been lovely and warm. Time to run around in the garden without clothes and jump into the paddling pool.

It's also given us a chance to prove that red strawberries taste better than green ones. Much better.

I wish we had more fruit in one go but the moment a strawberry is red all over there's nothing stopping the monkeys to pick it. We've been known to share one strawberry between three people. The only fruit that lasts to make for a decent harvest are the blackberries, they can fend for themselves. Oh and the apples as they are too high up for little monkeys to reach.
