Marbles

Big Monkey is the proud owner of a marble run. However, she does not play nearly as often with it as Little Monkey would like.

Luckily she has become a lot more willing to share the precious marbles in recent weeks so Little Monkey gets to play with it. He loves them and spends a lot of time dropping the marbles in but he needs a bit of help in building the run especially as he always wants one that is his size.

Valentine's Day

How else to celebrate than start with heart shaped pancakes? With raspberries and sugar!

Big Monkey had a friend to stay over so that made it all even better.
Notice the same nighties? They sewed them at school's sewing club two winters ago.

Everybody enjoyed the pancakes only one person used the moment to pull funny faces and try to escape having a decent photo taken...

Counterfeit kit layouts AND embellishments

I've made two more layouts with my kit and got some photos (and memorabilia) on a layout.

However, I was also inspired to make my own embellish ments. I'm very impressed by that if I may say that. Not only did this help with my interbreeding chipboard shapes I also used some of the word stickers from Authentique. I got this in my monthly kit and while they always look so useful and pretty I never use them as the words don't always are what I would need to say what I want to say. The little embellishments look rather cute too.

How to eat a pomegranate

When talking about what fruit are in season right now I mentioned that pomegranates are right now. Big Monkey was all excited and asked whether we can have one as she loves them, but she wanted it whole and not already deseeded. Not a problem they are easily found right now. The local grocer's had a big box on display with the sign "pomigranite" I liked that so I chose one of those. Until then I didn't think much about how to actually cut it open and eat it, however, while blog hopping randomly in the afternoon I came across a post on how to open a pomegranate. So that's what we did.

We cut off the top and quartered it.

Then I filled the bowl with water and pulled the seeds out. That way the white membrane floats on the surface and can be easily removed and the seeds don't stain the work top or clothes. I had forgotten about that so I now have a stained chopping board. But that's alright it can be friends with the one I cut beetroot on.

One pomegranate has quite a lot of seeds, we had ours with vanilla ice cream. Yum!

Someone said he didn't want them as they were yucky but strangely had his fingers constantly in my bowl to nick lots and lots of them.

Bit Monkey was very happy and she loved how pretty the insides were and she thought it was delicious, whatever you call it.

Our week in review

Outside our window: Snow and sunshine, icicles, snow men and a very little orange balloon. Excited birds who found the enormous big fat ball that I put out for them yesterday.

From the kitchen: The highlight was without a doubt the party food for Little Monkey's Birthday party. My favourite were the rainbow fruit skewers, they looked so pretty and were so delicious I forgot for a second that most of the fruit were out of season and had come a very long way. But then it's February and really one can't do much with old crumpled apples that looks as pretty. The rest of the week we had simple and warming food that fit the season.

In the learning room: Boring old math although Big Monkeys is motivated to get better on the speed sheets we've been doing. One morning she said, "gimme one of those minute ones, I want to get faster". Now that's a good thing. We also use http://uk.ixl.com where she can get medals and stickers which also helps with the motivation. In science we grew some beans in a glass jar which was good fun. Their start was a tad bit slow but then they had a burst and they suddenly went from tiny little stem to 5 cm with the first true leaves and hitting the lid practically over night.

It's amazing how something that simple really made us all so excited. Everybody gathered round to marvel at the little bean plants like it a miracle happened.
In art we talked about Frida Kahlo, Big Monkey drew a picture of fruit a rather untypical subject Frida Kahlo's. So for next week the plan is to create a self portrait.

We've been creating: Valentine's cards, decorations, presents, scrapbook layouts and drawings. Little Monkey missed out on his weekly messy play class as he and Big Monkey had too much fun at the Science Museum. At home he was too busy to build a train track than to make the finger prints I had hoped he would do with me. I made two more letter post cards for my Alphabetica swap for my Yahoo group.

Favourite things: Plants that grow. I had taken a leaf cutting of my African Violet and while it had grown roots and been in its new pot for a while now nothing else has grown. This week, however, not one but three set of tiny little leaves emerged.
Polite Little Monkeys who say please even in the middle of the night when their blanket needs putting back onto their bed.

Things we've done: A visit to the library to which Little Monkey showed the way. We read lots and lots of books and took out a dvd about Thomas the Tank Engine much to the joy and excitement of Little Monkey. Big Monkey chose one about Polar bears, she found a little cuddly one in a Kinderegg and thought she wanted to know more. A trip to the Science museum, the swimming pool and Clowntown where Big Monkey met a Monkey friend from school just by coincidence.

Counterfeit kit layout #1

I made the first layout with my kit and I used one of the borders I had for ages and also the big journalling block. I am rather pleased with this. I also managed to use some memorabilia in the form of a little letter Big Monkey had written to Little Monkey. She normally doesn't do this, well, as he can't read it's a bit pointless but she tucked this note into his bed one night. So I thought it would be sweet to keep this to show them when they are older. I always keep notes and messages but it all gets overhand and I rarely use them on my pages so this is a good start. What do you do with these memorabilia?

Love much sign

In my attempts to tidy up my craft room, again, I came across this tic tac toe board. I've head it for so long I can't even remember where it came from. I thought it was either trow it out or do something with it.

I started with the vague idea of something with hearts for Valentine's Day. I added paper and some 7Gypsie's Glue rub-ons that had to be gilded, flocked or somehow otherwise covered.

Then I cut out the hearts with the Sizzix, and added some letters so it says Love much. Then I stuck them onto the board naturally one got lost. I wanted the hearts to stand out a bit more so I used buttons because I threw out the foam stickies in a fit.

The missing heart turned up after all, hurray. I think I'll put the sign in the entrance hall on the plant stand.
